Barracuda Load Balancer

Client Impersonation

  • Last updated on

By default, for Layer 7 Services, the Barracuda Load Balancer’s WAN IP address is used when connecting to the Real Server. In certain cases, you may want the Barracuda Load Balancer to connect to the Real Server using the client IP address instead.

To use the client's IP address instead:

  1. Edit the Service. On the Service Detail page, enable the Client Impersonation option.
  2. When the Real Server responds to a message using the client IP, the traffic will go directly to the client. However, the client is expecting the response from the Barracuda Load Balancer. In order for the return traffic to pass through the Barracuda Load Balancer, you must change the default gateway of each Real Server in the pool to an address on the Barracuda Load Balancer. Ideally, you should create a custom virtual interface that associates an externally-accessible IP address with the WAN port, and use that IP address for the gateway.

To create the custom virtual interface:

    • On the Advanced > Advanced Networking page, in the Custom Virtual Interfaces table, create a custom interface by filling in the fields:
      • IP/Network Address and Netmask – an externally-accessible IP address and netmask (may be on the same subnet as the WAN IP address)
      • Service/Interface Name – e.g., External IP Address
      • Port – Select WAN from the list.
