Allowing Barracuda Security Awareness Training Information

  • Last updated on

Barracuda Security Awareness Training (SAT) uses advanced training and simulation to measure your organization's vulnerability to phishing emails and teach your users how to avoid becoming victims of data theft, malware, and ransomware. To deploy Barracuda SAT in your organization, you must first add Barracuda SAT’s IP address ranges and domains to the Allow List on the  BLOCK/ACCEPT > IP Filters page of the Barracuda Email Security Gateway to ensure that SAT campaign emails are not blocked.

Note: These settings are required for each Barracuda SAT email campaign you run. You might need to adjust the settings if, for example, your campaign uses a different domain.

Sending Test Messages

It is good practice to send a sample email for your campaign (Stage 3 of the Campaign setup process) to verify email delivery and confirm that the components of the test (link, landing page, attachment, etc.) work properly.

For details, refer to Approving an Email Campaign and Going Live in the Barracuda SAT documentation.

Allowing by Barracuda SAT IP Addresses

Barracuda Networks recommends adding IP addresses to the Allow List instead of allowing domains. This is because spammers can use an exempt email address to bypass filtering; as such, adding an IP address to the Allow List in the BLOCK/ACCEPT > IP Filters page is a more reliable way to identify trusted domains, and is recommended over Allow Listing domains.

To implement your Barracuda SAT campaign, you must first add the following IP address range to the Allow List: (see Email Allow List and Best Practices):

3.145.232.16/28

To add these IP addresses to the Allow List:

  1. Log into your Barracuda Email Security Gateway web interface.
  2. Go to the BLOCK/ACCEPT > IP Filters page.
  3. In the Allowed IP/Range section, enter the first Barracuda SAT Server in the IP/Network Address field.
  4. In the Netmask field, type 255.255.255.255.
  5. Optionally, add a note in the Comment field. For example, type: Barracuda SAT IP Address
  6. Click Add.
  7. Complete steps 2 through 6 for each of the Barracuda SAT IP addresses.

Allowing by Campaign Email Addresses

If the email sender and recipient addresses are the same, the Barracuda Email Security Gateway disregards any Allow List entries and processes the mail normally. This is done because spammers know that users tend to Allow List their own email address.

In addition to adding the Barracuda SAT IP addresses to the Allow List, you can set specific rules on email addresses used to send out the Barracuda SAT campaign to your users.

  1. Log into your Barracuda Email Security Gateway web interface.
  2. Go to the BLOCK/ACCEPT > Sender Filters page.
  3. In the Allowed Email Addresses and Domains section, enter the first recipient email address you want to always exempt (Allow List) in the Email Address/Domain field.
  4. Optionally, add a note in the Comment field. For example, type: Barracuda SAT Campaign Email
  5. Click Add.
  6. Complete steps 2 through 5 for any additional email addresses you want on the Allow List.

Allowing by Domain

Each campaign lists the domain names used to deliver your campaign content. You can add a domain to the Allow List on the BLOCK/ACCEPT > Sender Filters page. Adding a domain, subdomain, or email sender in the Allowed Email Addresses and Domains section always accepts, or allows messages, meaning that:

  • Messages from senders on the Allow List bypass spam scoring, intent analysis, Bayesian filtering, keyword filters, and all other block lists.

  • Virus scanning and rate control still apply.

Spammers can use an allowed email address to bypass filtering; as such, adding an IP address to the Allow List in the BLOCK/ACCEPT > IP Filters page, as described above, is a more reliable way to identify trusted domains, and is recommended over Allow Listing domains.

To add email addresses and/or domains to the Allow List:

  1. Log into your Email Security Gateway web interface.
  2. Go to the BLOCK/ACCEPT > Sender Filters page.
  3. In the Allowed Email Addresses and Domains section, enter the domain name you want on the Allow List.
  4. Optionally, add a note in the Comment field, for example, type: Barracuda SAT Domain
  5. Click Add.
  6. Complete steps 2 through 5 for any additional domains you want on the Allow List.

For additional details on this subject, refer to Email Allow List and Best Practices in the Barracuda SAT documentation.
