How to Configure WAN Optimization Policies

  • Last updated on

WAN Compression works best when applied to homogenous network traffic. You can create WAN Optimization policies that include entries to specify network traffic that should be compressed. For each entry, you can either select an algorithm to compress the traffic or specify that the traffic should not be compressed. In the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, a default policy is included. The default policy contains a range of services that includes entries for the most common network traffic. You can use this policy or create and configure a new policy.

Create a WAN Optimization Policy

  1. Go to CONFIGURATION > Configuration Tree > Box > Virtual Servers > your virtual server > Assigned Services > VPN-Service > Site to Site.
  2. Click the WANOpt Policies tab.
  3. Click Lock.
  4. Right-click the table and select New Policy.
  5. In the New Policy Rule Name field, enter a name for the policy.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Send Changes and Activate.

Create a WAN Optimization Policy Entry

  1. Go to CONFIGURATION > Configuration Tree > Box > Virtual Servers > your virtual server > Assigned Services > VPN-Service > Site to Site.
  2. Click the WANOpt Policies tab.
  3. Click Lock.
  4. Specify the network traffic for this entry. Right-click the policy and select one of the following options:

    OptionDescription
    New Generic Rule Entry

Use this entry for network traffic that is not covered by one of the default entries.

    New FTP Rule Entry

Use this entry to classify FTP network traffic for compression.

    New SMB Rule Entry

Use this entry to cover SMB2 or CIFS traffic for compression.

Note, that optimization of SMB1 and signed SMB2 traffic is not supported. (In the second case, you will have to adjust the domain policy of the Windows Server to disable SMB signing.)

  5. In the rule entry configuration window, you can specify the following settings:

    SettingDescription
    Type
This read-only field displays the type of WAN compression entry.
    Policy

The optimization policy that specifies how the network traffic is compressed. You can select one of the following options:

    • Deduplication+Compression
    • Deduplication
    • Compression
    • No-WANopt
Port List The ports for the network traffic to be optimized. You can enter a space-, comma-, or semicolon-delimited list of ports. Port ranges are allowed. For example, you can enter:
    80, 1024-1050
Source NetworkThe source network. This setting is honored only if both firewalls use firmware 5.4.4. or higher.
Destination Network The target network address of traffic to be compressed. If no destination network is assigned, traffic is optimized according to the defined Port List.
    Comment
Field for optional comments. You can enter a maximum of 1024 characters for your comments.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Send Changes and Activate.
