Barracuda Email Security Gateway

How can I customize NDR (bounce) messages generated by my Email Security Gateway?

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 9 months ago
Solution #00003576

Scope:
All Email Security Gateways, all firmware versions.

Answer:
Barracuda Networks recommends that you disable bounce messages on your Email Security Gateway so that your Email Security Gateway will not generate "backscatter" (see Solution #00001720). That said, if you want to customize your bounce messages, you may do so by following these steps:
  1. Go to the Advanced > Bounce/NDR page of the Email Security Gateway's web interface.
  2. Select Custom from the Default Language drop-down menu.
  3. Click the Save Changes button.
  4. As of firmware 6.x and above there ARE 3 bounce message templates should now appear customizable. Make your desired changes and click Save Changes to change the content of bounce messages generated and sent by your Email Security Gateway when:

    1. A message is blocked for spam and a notification is sent to the sender.
    2. A message is quarantined due to content and a notification is sent to the sender.
    3. A message blocked due to content and a notification is sent to the sender.

    • Note: previous to firmware 6.x, there were four bounce message templates should now appear customizable. Make your desired changes and click Save Changes to change the content of bounce messages generated and sent by your Email Security Gateway when:
      • An attachment is blocked and a notification is sent to the intended recipient.
      • An attachment is blocked and a notification is sent to the sender.
      • A message is blocked for spam and a notification is sent to the sender.
      • A message is blocked for virus and a notification is sent to the sender.
    Additional Notes:
When you build custom bounce messages, you can use any of the following macros, or shortcuts, to insert dependent values like the date and time, your list of banned file attachments, or the intended recipient address:
    • %d - RFC 2822 date-time (current time).
    • %m - 'Message-ID' header field.
    • %j - 'Subject' header field.
    • %f - 'From' header field.
    • %T - 'To' header field.
    • %R - SMTP recipient of the message. This is the real email address to which delivery was attempted.
    • %s - Original envelope sender, RFC 2821-quoted and enclosed in angle brackets.
    • %S - Address that receives sender notification. This is normally a one-entry list containing sender address (%s), but may be unmangled/reconstructed in an attempt to undo the address forgery done by some viruses.
    • %v - Output of the previous virus checking program.
    • %F - A list of banned file names.
    • %r - Reason message was blocked. This should only be used in Spam (Sender) Bounce/NDR.
    • %e - Specific reason message was blocked (for Intent, this is the domain referenced in message.) This should only be used in Spam (Sender) Bounce/NDR.
