BESS Operational Issues on October 22, 2011

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 5 years ago
Solution #00006129

Scope:

Barracuda Email Security Service

Answer:

At 15:38 Eastern Time, on October 22, 2012, some customers experienced a temporary loss of service due to operational errors after a utility outage in one of our data centers. It was confirmed that service was restored for all customers by 16:32 Eastern Time the same day. Existing safeguards ensured that inbound email for properly configured customers continued during this period and that no email was lost as a result of the incident. An in-depth evaluation has resulted in additional safety measures to prevent future loss of service incidents.

There was a separate connectivity issue to our DNS servers. The root cause was an error in a spam rule for multi-level intent that caused an inordinate number of queries to our DNS servers. This particular definition was pushed out at 13:04 p.m. Our team was working on the issue during the entire period until resolution at 12:51 a.m. EST on October 23, 2012. The issues are now resolved and all services are now working as expected.

We apologize for interruptions during this period.
