How do I setup Virtual Library devices using Yosemite Server Backup?

Yosemite Server Backup 8.8 and newer.

Answer:
Yosemite Server Backup supports the creation of virtual backup devices on both a local hard disk or on a network. These devices are referred to as Virtual Library Devices. Virtual Library devices emulate standard tape libraries and can be configured to your specifications. Once created, you can back up data to the virtual device instead of to physical media.

A Yosemite Server Backup Virtual Library is functionally equivalent to a physical, or real, tape library. Like a physical tape library, a Yosemite Server Backup Virtual Library has one or more backup drives and a set of storage elements (slots) containing media. These drives, storage elements, and media are all virtual (that is, they appear to be real drives, storage elements, and media to Yosemite Server Backup, but they are not real devices or media and only exist within Yosemite Server Backup). All operations, such as backup, restore, and most media operations, can be performed using the Virtual Library Device.

To perform D2D* backups, simply create a regular backup job and select a Virtual Library as the backup device.

Below are the steps to creating a Virtual Library Device:

  1. Open the Yosemite Server Backup Administrator (Start > All Programs > Barracuda > Yosemite Server Backup).
  2. Select Tasks.
  3. Select Create Virtual Library.
  4. Select the machine that you would like the Virtual Library to be associated with.
  5. Enter a name for the Virtual Library (This is how the device will appear in the device list).
  6. Click OK (Version 9.0.0 and older Click Next)
  7. Set the options in the Virtual Library Options section as desired: (Version 9.0.0 and older continues to follow the Wizard whereas 9.0.01 and newer takes you straight into the properties of the Virtual Library)
    • a. Storage folder options:
      • This allows you to specify where on disk this Virtual Library will keep its extent files (backed up data).  The default path is placed in the D2D folder where Yosemite Server Backup is installed.  This path can be deleted and a new path added using the magnifying glass for local disc space or using a UNC path for network storage.  In version 9.0.01 and newer a Test function is available and section for adding user credentials for access to the desired path.
      • i. Capacity: Determines how much disk space the Virtual Library is allowed to use.
      • ii. Min. Free: Specifies the minimum amount of disk space for Yosemite to leave on the volume.  In version 9.0.01 this has been hard coded to be 2 GB as Yosemite Server Backup writes in 1 GB increment blocks, a 2 GB minimum disc space check between blocks prevents a situation of the backup getting stopped from running out of space mid-block.
    • b. Virtual Tape Drives:
      • The primary reasons for increasing this is to allow more then 8 streams and two media to be written at the same time.  For every additional device selected it will create an additional media within the catalog for each backup set.
    • c. Virtual Storage Slots:
      • This directly impacts the number of virtual media available in this device.
  8. Click Policy Configuration for additional configuration.  (Version 9.0.0 and older Click Next)


This next step allows the user to setup some additional policies related to this Virtual Library Device.

* Limit capacity of cartridges:
Enabling this feature allows the user to limit how much data can be written to each virtual media.

* Secure erase policy:
If Secure Erase is enabled, whenever a media is erased or overwritten the previous data is overwritten by zeros before being removed. It is important to note that this can take some time to perform and thus may add time to the backup window.

Please note that the D2D2Ne(tm)* feature available here on the device is a legacy feature available primarily for older setups. The current and recommended place to set up a copy to another device is on the Copy Policy page of the backup job.

The options in the D2D2Ne(tm)* section as follows:

  • * Copy Policy
    • This setting enables or disables this feature.
  • * Destination device name
    • Allows for the selection of which device the media will be copied to.
  • Delay
    • Specify the time between the backup job completes and the time in which the copy to the specified device will begin.
  • * Retention Policy
  • ? Retain data until overwritten
    • Backup data will be retained on the media in the Virtual library until it is specifically overwritten or erased. This is a good policy to use for backups that you want to keep on disk for fast D2D* Restores at any time and is the default option.
  • ? Retain data until copied
    • Backup data will be retained on the media in the Virtual library until it is successfully copied to the target device of this policy. In this case, space in the storage folder will be freed up after the copy operation completes.
  • ? Retain data until space is needed
    • Backup data will be retained on the media in the Virtual library it is successfully copied to the copy device, and the storage folder is full. If during a subsequent backup the storage folder becomes full, the backup data will be automatically deleted from the storage folder to make room for the new backup. Only backups that have been successfully copied to the copy device will be removed under this policy.

At this point you are done configuring your Virtual Library Device and can click Finish to finalize the setup.

  • D2D2Ne(tm) - Trademarked term used to reference the feature in Yosemite Backup that allows you to backup from disk to disk and then copy that to any supported target device.
