Barracuda NextGen Firewall X

Tuning a box to a lower memory usage

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 6 months ago
Solution #00005093

Scope:
This solution replies to:
- NG Firewall firmware versions 4.2.x,5.0.x, 5.2.x
- netfence firmware versions 4.2.x

Symptoms:

For slow boxes with low RAM memory it is useful to decrease the memory usage of the gateway to get enough free available memory.

Solution:

Reason for the high load is the relationship of dependence between number of session slots and memory usage on a box using the firewall module (trans 7). As the apcf is enabled to take up the maximum available number of 65536 session slots, it thus drives the firewall module to consume the default value of 58 MB RAM.
As the box is in fact meant to serve for small offices only, it is not dimensioned for usage of this large number of slots.

Configure the "Max Session Slots" value via NG Admin. In the configuration tree, navigate to "Config" > "Box" > "Infrastructure Services" > "General Firewall Configuration" > "Global Limits". Set the "Max. Session Slots" to a lower value.

Example:
"Max Session Slots" = 65536 ~ 58 MB (Complete Box Memory usage is reached with 80 MB)
"Max Session Slots" = 20000 ~ 29 MB (Complete Box Memory usage is reached with 51 MB)
