Barracuda NextGen Firewall X

Installing CCISS Machines with a USB-Floppy

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 5 months ago
Solution #00005103

Scope:
This solution replies to:
- NG Firewall firmware versions 4.2.x
- netfence firmware versions 4.2.x

Symptoms:

After installing a CCISS machine with an USB floppy device, the box does not boot.

Solution:

When installation is done from USB floppy, wrong parameters are written into /etc/lilo.conf.

Boot the box with the netfence installation CD using this parameter at the prompt:

    phion rescue

Several error messages will be displayed during installation procedure. Ignore and confirm these messages by pressing Enter to continue.

After installation has finished, type the following command at the prompt:

    chroot /mnt/sysimage

Edit the /etc/lilo.conf with a text editor (e.g. vi).

    vi /etc/lilo.conf

Change following parameters:

    boot=/dev/sda
    root=/dev/sda1

            to
    boot=/dev/cciss/c0d0
    root=/dev/cciss/c0d0p3

Activate the updated lilo.conf by typing lilo at the prompt:

    /sbin/lilo

The new configuration will be confirmed with following output on the prompt:

    Added phion *

Reboot the machine with this commant:

    reboot

Note:
On some hardware it is possible that the update of the lilo fails while running /sbin/lilo. If the messages like this occours, then you have to set one more option in the /etc/lilo.conf.

LINEAR is deprecated in favor of LBA32
part_nowrite: read:: Input/output error

Set this value to the /etc/lilo.conf.

    disk=/dev/sda inaccessible

After the reboot of the box, you have also set this option to the "Config" > "Box "> "Advanced Configuration" > "Bootloader" > "Global Append Options".

Note:
It's possible, that the boot attempt breaks after doing the steps above. In this case start the box with the bootloader option acpi=off. After the boot is finished, set this option in the "bootloader" options. Set the checkbox No ACPI.
