Log message 'device [x] entered promiscuous mode' reported in klogd.log

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 6 months ago
Solution #00005144

Scope:
This solution replies to:
- NG Firewall firmware versions 4.2.x,5.0.x, 5.2.x
- netfence firmware versions 4.2.x

Symptoms:

Log messages like the following are reported in the log file "Log" > "Box" > "System" > "klogd.log":

Info +0200 kernel: device eth6 entered promiscuous mode

What does it mean?

Solution:

The messages are associated with "tcpdump" (network sniffing tool) execution. A device changes to promiscuous mode every time tcpdump is executed.

The messages are purely informational and do not report a malfunction.
