Lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages causes hotfix/patch installation failure

Scope:
This solution replies to:
- NG Firewall firmware versions 4.2.x, 5.0.x
- netfence firmware versions 4.2.x

 
Symptoms:

Hotfix/patch installation on an CC-administered box in the "Control Centre" > "Control" > "Software Update" fails. The following

 

  error message is written to the box log file:

  error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages

 
Solution:

Exclusive access to the file /var/lib/rpm/Packages is required by the tool "phionRelCheck". phionRelCheck is responsible for version control of RPM-packages and is executed on a regular basis at 2:30 AM (based on local box time), when a box is rebooted and after software update. The time "phionRelCheck" needs to complete its task depends on box performance. 15 seconds might be sufficient on a high-performance, whereas up to 10 minutes might be needed on a low-performance system.

The error message indicates that "phionRelCheck" is already running thus locking the file /var/lib/rpm/Packages and preventing the software update procedure to lock the file itself.

 

 

Assure that "phionRelCheck" is not running before commencing a software update. When active, the process "phionRelCheck" will be listed in "Control" > "Processes" tab of the respective box.
