Barracuda NextGen Firewall X

How to install and activate reissued legacy phion licenses and add-licenses

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: one year ago
Solution #00005164

Scope:
This solution replies to:
- NG Firewall firmware versions 4.2.x, 5.0.x, 5.2.x
- netfence firmware versions 4.2.x

Symptoms:

Reinstallation of a Barracuda NG Firewall gateway on a different hardware than the original one requires reissue of legacy phion licenses bound to a host-key. As the license name does not change and thus new license information is not imported automatically, reissued licenses have to be activated on the system explicitly in order to become effective. The same applies to installation of add-licenses.

Solution:

The activation procedure described below applies to the following scenarios:

Scenario 1:
After installation of a self-managed Barracuda NG Firewall gateway or a Control Centre with PAR file on a new hardware, the system has changed into grace mode. Aim is, to replace the former licenses with the reissued ones.
On single boxes license reissue is required for, e.g., Box, BOB, Cobion, Virscan, VPN Pool licenses. On Control Centres, license reissue is required for CC Box and Master license.

Proceed as follows to activate reissued licenses on self-managed Barracuda NG Firewall gateways and Control Centres:

On self-managed netfence gateways and Management Centres (on box-level) :

1. In "Config" > "Box" > "Box Licenses" , delete obsolete licenses.

2. Click the "Send Changes" and "Activate" buttons. Note that if a base box license has been deleted from the configuration, the system will change into DEMO mode. Active connections will be terminated shortly because the firewall service will be restarted.

3. Import the reissued licenses.

4. Click the "Send Changes" and "Activate" buttons.

Additionally on self-managed netfence gateways only:

5. In "Config" > "Box" > "Virtual Servers" > "<Servername>" > "Affected Services" > "<Servicename>" > "Client to Site" > "Pool Licenses" tab, import the reissued VPN Pool License(s).

Important!
Do not delete former licenses before importing the reissued ones. Deleting obsolete VPN pool licenses will lead to VPN profile configuration information loss!

6. Click the "Send Changes" and "Activate" buttons.

Additionally on Management Centres (Master-Licenses) only:

5. Log in to the MC on server level.

6. In "Config" > "Multi-Range" > "Global Settings" > "CCIdentity" , delete the obsolete Master License.

7. Click the "Send Changes" and "Activate" buttons.

8. In "Config" > "Multi-Range" > "Global Settings" > "CC Identity", import the reissued Master License.

9. Click the "Send Changes" and "Activate" buttons.

Scenario 2:
You have upgraded you networking infrastructure and have thus received reissued pool licenses or newly issued add licenses. Aim is to install these licenses and update license information on CC-administered boxes.

Proceed as follows to install and update license information on MC-administered boxes:

1. Log in to the MC on server level.

2. In "Config" > "Multi-Range" > "<Rangename>" > "<Clustername>" > "Boxes" > "<Boxname>" > "Box Licenses" , delete assigned pool licenses.

3. In "Config" > "Multi-Range" > "Global Settings" > "Pool Licenses", delete available pool licenses.

4. Click the "Send Changes" and "Activate" buttons. Note that when base box licenses have been deleted from the configuration, the CC-administered systems will change into DEMO mode. Active connections will be terminated shortly because the firewall services will be restarted.

5. In "Config" > "Multi-Range" > "Global Settings" > "Pool Licenses", import the reissued pool and/or add licenses.

6. In Config" > "Multi-Range" > "<Rangename>" > "<Clustername>" > "Boxes" > "<Boxname>", reassign/assign reissued pool and/or add licenses, respectively.

7. Click the "Send Changes" and "Activate" buttons.

Note:
You could add just one ADD license for each service. This means, that you may use only one e.g. ADD-FW license on one box.
