RAM and CPU usage tuning for small appliances

  • Type: Knowledgebase

Solution #00005312

Scope:
This solution replies to:
- NG Firewall firmware versions 4.2.x, 5.0.x, 5.2.x
- netfence firmware versions 4.2.x

Symptoms:
Some appliances are shipped with 256MB RAM. It is possible, that the appliance reports a high CPU and RAM usage after a default installation without any running services, especially if this hardware is flash-based (without harrddisc). This article will shows several tuning possibilities to decrease the RAM and CPU usage, especially after a startup of the box.

Solution:
Now it is needed to tune the system for a low RAM and CPU usage.

1) Decrease the firewall session slots in "Box" > "Infrastructure Services" > "General Firewall Configuration" > "Global Limits" and set the option "Max. Session Slots" to a value of 8192. This change will decrease the Memory usage to 22-25MB.

Note:
The box service "boxfw" must be restartet to enable the new setting.

Note:
The value of 8192 session slots is the default value if you configure your box with the correct product type. If you configure another product type and change the this type later upon your hardware, then you have to set the session slots manually.

2) Disable the "phionRelCheck" at system startup. Set in "Box" > "Advanced Settings" > "Software Update" the option "Boottime Release Check" to no . This setting will decrease the RAM und CPU usage at the system startup.
