Barracuda Phone System

How do I configure backups on my Barracuda Phone System?

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 2 years ago

Solution #00004847

Scope:

This solution applies to all Barracuda Phone Systems, firmware 1.2.003.024 and above.

Answer:

The Barracuda Phone System can be configured to do manual or scheduled backup to an FTP Server or a SMB (Windows/CIFS) share. The BPS will require read/write access to the remote server/share in order to complete backups.

Please contact Support before restoring if you have any questions about this procedure.

The following information will be backed up:
  • All device configuration *EXCEPT* the configuration under sections Configuration > Network and Configuration > Security
  • All uploaded Phone Firmware
  • All Media including Sound Prompts, Music on Hold Files, and Voice mails
  • All Call Recordings and Faxes
  • All Call Detail Records
    • Please note that, while most customizations will be backed up, Barracuda recommends that if you are not sure please contact support to confirm whether your customizations or patches will persist a backup and restore.
When a backup is run, the Barracuda Phone System will create an archive of these items and move it to the configured location for you.
  • In firmware version 2.1 and later, the Barracuda Phone System will create a folder in the designated path using its serial number for the folder name and will place all backups in this folder.

Configuring Your Backup Location:

Note: It is recommended that the folder used for BPS backups has read access restricted to the Barracuda Phone System and to Administrators.
  • Navigate to Configuration > Backup, and select the share type from the selection box.
  • Fill out the appropriate fields as listed below:
  • For FTP Backup:
    • Server Address - IP address of the Server
    • Port - Leave blank for default (port 21/22)
    • Username - Username with Read/Write Privileges
    • Password - Password for the listed username on the share.
    • Folder/Path - The Full FTP Path to the share for backup -- Please note that spaces cannot be used in the folder path.
  • For SMB Backup:
    • Server address - IP address of the Server
    • Port - Leave blank for default (port 445)
    • Username - Username with Read/Write Privileges
    • Share - The Network Name of the Shared Folder
    • Domain - The SMB Domain on which the share is hosted
    • Password - Password for the listed username on the share.
    • Folder/Path - The Full Path to the share for backup -- Please note that spaces cannot be used in the folder path.
  • Click the Apply Settings button, then click the Test Settings button to certify results.
  • Select a Backup Schedule by Clicking Add a Time, then selecting the proper days and times from the selection boxes.
It is recommended to select test to confirm success, then Backup Now and check to be certain that the process will complete successfully after the initial setup.

Scheduling Your Backup Runs:

  • Navigate to Configuration > Backup, and scroll down to the section labeled Schedule.
  • Click the link labeled Add a Time and Select the Duration (Weekly or Monthly), Day, and Time.

Restoring Your Backups:

Note - The Recent Backups section contains an ordered list of the last several backup attempts in order to confirm that the backup process is running correctly. If the backups are deleted from the server or moved to a new location, they will no longer be available via these links.

To restore to the Same Barracuda Phone System:
  • Navigate to Configuration > Backup, and click on the button List Backups
  • Scroll down to the section labeled Backups on Server
  • Find the backup which you are looking to restore by date and time of backup and click Restore
  • The Server will complete the Restore and then reboot once completed.
  • Please note: In firmware version 3.0.000.075 and later there is a Completed/Running Backups table and a Backups on Server table.  The Completed/Running Backups tables shows historical backups and the status of current pending backups to the configured backup destination.  The Backups on Server table show the actual backups that reside on the physical disk of the backup destination.  The historical backups table may contain references to backup files that do not exist anymore, which will result in an error if you attempt to restore them.  To ensure that you restore the correct file, please use the Backups on Server table.

* The time required to complete a restore is dependent on the size of the restore and the speed of the network connection. *

To restore to a different Barracuda Phone System:

*Note - for Barracuda Phone Systems running Firmware version 2.1 or later, you will need to rename the backup folder created by the original unit to the serial number of the new BPS. It will currently be named by the serial number of the Existing BPS.
  • Navigate to System > Backup, and select the share type from the selection box.
  • Fill out the appropriate fields as listed below:
  • Install the BPS on your network and complete the settings in sections Configuration > Network and Configuration > Security --
  • You can restore alongside your existing Barracuda Phone System by selecting a different IP address until you are ready to remove the existing BPS. The network settings are not restored.
  • Update the firmware on the unit to AT LEAST the same version as the existing BPS.
  • Configure the settings as listed above, to match the proper location of the backups, save, then click the Button Labeled "List Backups".
  • Scroll down to the section labeled Backups on Server, locate the backup you want to restore by date and time, and click the Restore Link.
  • The BPS will restore the backup and reboot.
    • Note -- If you are restoring alongside a running BPS and are using SIP Trunk Providers or VoIP analog Gateways, you may need to login after the restore is complete and un-check the "Requires Registration" link on the New server, and save the configuration.
    • This will prevent the Barracuda Phone Systems from completing for the registration. Please remember to note which providers have been disabled so that you can re-enable them after you complete the transition to the new server.

Please contact Support before restoring if you have any questions about this procedure.
