Solution #00005724

Scope:

Applies to Barracuda Phone Systems, firmware version 2.x and above.

Answer:

Shared Line Appearance is a feature allowing some phones to update their status to other phones sharing the extension using SLP Notification packets. This feature, commonly called Busy Lamp Field (or BLF), gives line-sharers the ability to tell if a user is on the phone. Some phones also support the ability to pick up a call on hold on a shared line, or to barge the call (if call barging is enabled on the shared line).

Some phones also support the ability to pick up a call on hold on a shared line, or to barge the call (if call barging is enabled on the shared line).

A list of phones currently supporting this feature can be found at https://www.barracuda.com/products/phonesystem/matrix

Important Note: Due to the nature of how shared line appearance works, enabling this feature significantly increases the amount of SIP traffic being handled by each phone sharing an extension. Enabling a large number of shard lines, or sharing a line with many phones, will generate much more network traffic. Please be sure to account for this when planning network capacity.

Enabling Status Updates:

The first step to enabling shared line appearance is to allow the phone to send updates on it's status. This can be accomplished using the following steps.

  1. Navigate to Extensions > People and click on the extension which you want to share.
  2. Scroll down to the Section labeled Phones and click on the phone that you want to share.
  3. Select Edit Phone in the item list that appears.
  4. Click on the extension number that you are going to share. This is displayed in the left side of the window that opens.
  5. Select the item Activate Shared Line Appearance on this line.
  6. Close the phone options box by clicking the X in the top right corner.
The phone will reboot to enable line notifications as soon as it is idle.

Adding the Shared Line to Other Phones:

Now that sharing is enabled, we need to assign which phones are allowed to monitor status on the line. This can be accomplished using the following steps.

  1. Navigate to Extensions > People and click on the person which you want to add the shared line to.
  2. Scroll down to the Section labeled Phones and click on the phone that you want to add the shared line to.
  3. Select Edit Phone in the item list that appears.
  4. Click on the option "Assign Line X". This is displayed in the left side of the window that opens.
  5. In the section Share a Line, Enter the Shared Extension in the box labeled Search for Phones.
  6. Select the proper extension from the list provided and click the bock labeled Share Line
  7. Close the phone options box by clicking the X in the top right corner.
The phone will reboot to add the shared line as soon as it is idle.
