Barracuda Phone System

How do I configure the Buddy Watch or Speed Dial Feature on my Polycom Phones?

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 2 years ago

Solution #00005811

Scope:

This solution applies to Polycom Soundpoint phones Provisioned by the Cudatel.

Answer:

Cudatel firmware version 2.1 added support for the Polycom Buddy Watch feature, which is a way to do a combined Busy Lamp Field (BLF) and Speed Dial button on the Polycom for any entry in the Contact Directory.

Once saved on the phone, it will upload the setting to the Cudatel on the next reboot, and we will include that Buddy Watch Entry in the configuration file when provisioning in the future. Any changes to the list will also be uploaded on reboot, and will be saved on the Cudatel, as well.

How Buddy Watch Functions:
The Buddy Watch icons will display as line entries, and will be ordered by their speed dial index. These entries will display starting on the first line available AFTER the configured line appearances for the phone. If you have two line appearances of Extension one, and one appearance of extension two assigned to the phone, the first buddy watch listing will start at line four. Buddy watch items show as line extensions, and will light red when the party is on the phone. They will also function as a speed dial button, enabling one touch dial for the destination.

Managing Buddy Watch Entries in firmware versions 2.1 - 2.5:

Firmware versions 2.1 through 2.5 use the Polycom upload utility for contacts. This requires editing the contacts from the phone.

Adding a Buddy Watch Entry:

  1. From the phone, navigate to Menu > Features > Contact Directory.
  2. Scroll down to the Desired User and Select Edit.
  3. In the settings list that appears, Add a Speed Dial Index (these are sequential numbers).
  4. Scroll down to the Buddy Watch Entry, and Set to Enabled with the arrow keys.
  5. Select Save, then select Back until you have exited the menu.

Deleting a Buddy Watch Entry:
  1. From the phone, navigate to Menu > Features > Contact Directory.
  2. Scroll down to the Desired User and Select Edit.
  3. In the settings list that appears, Remove the Speed Dial Index (these are sequential numbers).
  4. Scroll down to the Buddy Watch Entry, and Set to Disabled with the arrow keys.
  5. Select Save, then select Back until you have exited the menu.

Managing Buddy Watch Entries in firmware versions 2.6 and Later:

Firmware version 2.6 switches to advanced provisioning, which uses the Cudatel UI for configuration of these entries for central management. The entries are no longer managed at the phone level.

Adding a Buddy Watch Entry:

  1. Navigate to the user to which the phone is assigned and Click on the Phone you wish to edit.
  2. Select an unused line and Enter a Label for the line. This label will show on the phone, if supported.
  3. Click on the Drop-down and Select either Transfer for Speed Dial or BLF/Line Monitor for Shared-Line Buddy watch.
  4. In the box that appears, Enter an Extension for BLF, or Enter an Extension or Phone Number for Transfer, and Click Apply to save.

Deleting a Buddy Watch Entry:

  1. Navigate to the user to which the phone is assigned and Click on the Phone you wish to edit.
  2. Select the line to be remove and Delete the Label for the line.
  3. Click on the Drop-down and Select Nothing.
  4. Click Apply to save.
