Why Can't I Upload a Newer Phone Firmware Version to My Barracuda Phone System?

This solution applies to all Barracuda Phone Systems.



Phone manufacturers often release firmware updates to address an issue being experienced in a particular environment, or with a particular provider or VoIP server. While this DOES address the issues which the Manufacturers need to handle, it has a side effect of introducing potential issues in other environments or on other Phone server installations. This can lead to a number of environmental inconsistencies and, therefore, unpredictable behavior from the phones themselves.

In order to prevent this problem, the Barracuda Phone System engineering team runs an exhaustive set of tests against any potential firmware release for phones to minimize the possibility of unknown issues being introduced that can effect your experience with your phone system. These tests included, but are not limited to:
  • Local and Remote Provisioning
  • Core Dependencies and Network Services
  • Registration and Basic Calling Features
  • Extended Feature-set and Optional Extras
  • Phone Security and Known Exploits
Once all tests confirm that the phone has no known issues which effect it's behavior, the firmware is made available to the Barracuda Phone System to download the next time it checks for provisioning updates. Phone firmware updates are check several times per day, and are downloaded automatically. They are then delivered to the phone on the next reboot.

For phones which require a manual upload by the customer due to licensing restrictions (example: cisco 79XX series phones), The Barracuda Phone System Documentation team will distribute a technical bulletin, and the new firmware version will show in the UI under Configuration > Phones.
