No. Installation of client software is not required to access SSL VPN. This is one of the core advantages of the Barracuda SSL VPN over other VPN technologies. SSL VPN solutions are often referred to as 'clientless VPNs'. While not strictly true (a client is still required for some features), the client is dynamically loaded over the internet using the Java applet technology and therefore does not require software installation as with native VPN clients.
A number of features within SSL VPN require the use of the Barracuda SSL VPN Agent, a Java application that is launched from an applet embedded in the web browser. In order for the successful running of the SSL VPN Agent, it will be necessary to have a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed on your machine. Most modern browsers support Java by default and this is usually not a problem.
The Barracuda SSL VPN requires a minimum of Java 1.4 in order for the SSL VPN Agent begin to provide access to features and a minimum of Java 1.5 is required for the Agent to work to it’s full potential and provide access to all features.
There are two exceptions regarding client software; one is the Barracuda Network Connector, which requires a driver to be preinstalled on the client machine before launching. The other is the Barracuda Server Agent, which is used to maintain a link for resources on networks which are physically separate from the LAN that SSL VPN is running on.
Firmware version 2.1 adds PPTP and IPSec functionality to the SSL VPN. These servers are included with the SSL VPN, but will require the appropriate clients to connect.
Most devices that will use PPTP or IPSec connections will already have a client installed by default, especially on current mobile devices.
