How can I configure a Mobile Device to access the Barracuda SSL VPN through IPsec/L2TP?

This solution applies to all Barracuda SSL VPN firmware 2.1 and newer.

Every Mobile Device has a different method for configuring IPsec/L2TP. The following are brief guides to the methods that have been encountered during testing of the various devices.

The following are the ports that these services utilize, and therefore will need to be opened on any firewall:

  • TCP 1723 + protocol 47 (GRE)
  • UDP 500, 4500
Windows Mobile 6.1
  1. Go to Settings > Connections > Add a new VPN Server Connection.
  2. Enter the required details,
    • An identifying name
    • Set Host name/IP to the SSL VPN hostname or IP
    • Set VPN type as PPTP
    • [Go to Next page]
    • Select A Pre-shared Key and set the Pre-shared Secret from the server
    • Set the User name and Password to those of the SSL VPN account
  3. Select Manage Existing Connections > VPN tab.
  4. Open the menu for the VPN connection, select Connect.
  1. Go to Network > VPN > Add a New VPN Configuration.
  2. Select IPsec/L2TP.
  3. Enter the required details,
    • An identifiying description
    • Set Server to the SSL VPN hostname
    • Set Account to the SSL VPN account
    • Switch RSA SecurID to Off
    • Account password
    • Set Secret to the Pre-shared Secret on the Server
    • Switch Send All Traffic to On
  4. The new VPN Configuration will be created. Enable the VPN connection to allow the device to connect to the SSL VPN.
  1. Go to Settings > Wireless Settings > VPN Settings > Add VPN > Add L2TP/IPsec PSK VPN.
  2. Enter the required details,
    • An identifying VPN Name
    • Set VPN Server as the SSL VPN hostname
    • Enable Encryption should enabled
    • DNS Search Domains should be set to the network the server is in
  3. The new VPN connection will be created. Enable the VPN connection to start the connection.
  4. A prompt for the SSL VPN username and password will be made before the connection can be completed; these can be saved.
