Barracuda Web Security Service

Why is my Barracuda Web Security Flex internet traffic being forwarded to a proxy server outside of my country?

Solution #00005792

Scope:
This solution applies to the Barracuda Web Security Flex service.

Answer:
The Web Security Flex service will forward all traffic to the "cloud" for processing. The service host or "hostname" configured to the Web Security Flex account determines where, in the "cloud", the traffic is sent to be filtered.

The service host/hostname has multiple geographical IP's spread across the world which are required to be properly resolved by DNS. In some cases free/public DNS services will resolve the hostname to a processing center thousands of miles away from the users network. To verify whether this is the issue, complete a nslookup of the service host/hostname and cross reference your findings with the below list of processing center IP's and locations. You can find your service host by logging into login.barracuda.com, clicking Web Security Flex, then clicking the Support Tab. The service host is listed at the bottom of the page.
  • Atlanta - 74.217.37.21
  • Atlanta - 74.217.37.27
  • San Jose - 64.235.152.12
  • Singapore - 122.248.234.20 and 122.248.234.31
  • Japan - 175.41.252.109 and 175.41.243.88
  • France - 95.172.71.8
  • London - 95.172.75.81
If you find the results of the DNS tests are conclusive, and the IP address you receive in the results is not considered to be the closest processing center to your network, we suggest utilizing a DNS service which is geographically located closer to your network. Example: Internet Service Provider DNS server IP's.
