Barracuda Web Security Service

How can I configure my SonicWALL Firewall to transparently proxy web traffic to the Web Security Service?

  • Type: Knowledgebase

Solution #00006394

Scope:
Applies to the Web Security Flex Service using a firewall web proxy forward deployment.

Answer:
The Barracuda Web Security Service offers several easy deployment options. Transparent proxy forwarding is a simple option which relies upon your firewall to send all web traffic to the Web Security Service. This is the ideal deployment for single-location installations with many anonymous users on mixed platforms. If this does not fit your organizational profile, please consider one of several other deployments as described in our TechLib.

Follow these instructions to transparently proxy forward all web traffic from a SonicWALL firewall to the Barracuda Web Security Service over port 8080:

  1. Navigate to Network > Web Proxy.
  2. In the Proxy Web Server (name or IP address) field, enter your service host, as found under the Support tab of the Web Security portal.
  3. In the Proxy Web Server Port field, enter 8080.
  4. Optionally, you can configure the SonicWALL to bypass the Web Security Service when it’s unavailable and send Web traffic directly to the Internet. Check the Bypass Proxy Servers Upon Proxy Server Failure box to enable this feature.
  5. Click Apply.

Additional Notes:
As of this writing, SonicWALL is not able to transparently redirect HTTPS traffic.

More details on web proxy forwarding can be found in the SonicWALL Administrator’s Guide.
