How to Restore/Delete Backups Using the Backup Daemon

  • Last updated on

Restoring a Backup with the Backup Daemon

Restore a backup with the Backup Daemon if you want to use a former configuration of your firewall, the box-level configuration of your Control Center, or of your managed firewalls.

You can not process backups from PAR files with the Backup Daemon!

Backups contain configuration settings where certain values can be outdated and no longer represent your current network configuration or the functional profile of your appliance:

  • Outdated values on the box level can modify the behavior of your firewall/Control Center and in certain cases even render your appliance unreachable!
  • Outdated authentication data can lead to locking yourself or others out from your firewall/Control Center!
  • Certain services can cease to work if they have been activated after the related backup has been created!
  • Especially on Control Centers, consider that restoring a backup on the CC level can disconnect managed firewalls completely from their related Control Centers and render them unreachable!

Be careful when confirming your choice to restore a backup!

Step 1. Check for Existing Backups
  1. Log into your firewall or Control Center on the box level.
  2. Go to CONTROL > Backups.
  3. Click Backups in the left upper corner.
  4. If backups do exist, they are displayed in the main view as a list.
  5. By default, the list is sorted by the column Creation Time in descending order, so you will see the newest backup on top of the list.
Step 2. Select and Restore a Certain Backup
  1. Locate the required backup entry in the list.
  2. Press the right mouse button while selecting the backup in the list.
  3. A list of multiple menu entries is displayed.
  4. Select Restore Backup from the list.

  5. Firewall Admin restores the backup. You will see the state of the backup marked with an orange progress indicator and the column Restore Status displaying the text Applying config backup.

Depending on the appliance (firewall, CC, managed firewalls) and the size of the associated configuration files, restoring a backup can take from some seconds up to several minutes.
  6. As soon as the backup is successfully restored, Firewall Admin will update the Restore Status column now displaying the text Successfully restored config backup.

After successfully restoring the backup, your appliance operates with the configuration according to the date of the restored backup.

Deleting a Backup with the Backup Daemon

If you want to delete a certain backup, perform the following steps:

  1. Locate the required backup entry in the list.
  2. Press the right mouse button while selecting the backup in the list.
  3. A list of multiple menu entries is displayed.
  4. Select Delete Backup from the list.

Note that clicking Delete Backup immediately deletes the backup.
