Performing an Advanced Onsite Manager Installation

Best Practices

Only site administrators should download an Onsite Manager.

When downloading an Onsite Manager, refer to the current version of the Setup Guide for the latest instructions.

You can download the Onsite Manager installer directly from Service Center, or you can download it from the portal. It is recommended that you install from Service Center, as this method detects your Service Center credentials and populates this information where applicable.

By default, SQL Server 2017 Express is installed with Onsite Manager, and you can choose to also install SQL Server 2017 Management Studio . If the Onsite Manager installer is unable to install either of these components, you are prompted to download them manually from the Microsoft website.

  1. In Service Center, click Site Management > Sites.
  2. Click the site you want to manage.
  3. Click Download Onsite Manager.
  4. Navigate to the folder where the setup package was downloaded.
  5. Extract the .zip file and run the SetupOM application.
  6. Click the Advanced option, and then click Next.
  7. Review the installation path. If required, click Browse to select a different location.
  8. Review the SQL Server Express root path for the dedicated instance for Barracuda RMM, LPIMWOMEXPRESS. If required, click Browse to select a different location. Click Next.
  9. To install SQL Server 2017 Management Studio, select SQL Server Tools. This is an optional install, but is recommended for interacting with the Onsite Manager database for technical support and maintenance. It requires PowerShell which may require a reboot.
  10. Click Next.
  11. In the Service Account page, type the MWService User Name and Password and then confirm your password. Click Next.

If an MWService account does not exist, the Onsite Manager Installer will create the user. If you are installing on a domain, the account will be created on the domain controller.

This account will be hidden from the Windows Welcome screen in a workgroup environment.

  12. If you downloaded the Onsite Manager installer from Service Center, the SCMessaging URL box is filled. If you downloaded from the portal, you must provide the SCMessaging URL, which enables Onsite Manager to communicate with Service Center. For example, http://www.companyname.com/SCMessaging/SCWebservices.asmx.

  13. Onsite Manager will automatically use any proxy which does not require authentication. If a proxy server is present and requires authentication, do the following:
    1. Enter the Server Address, Username and Password.
    2. Define the authentication type by selecting either Basic, Digest or Negotiate.
  14. Click Next.
  15. To scan the local subnet, select the Auto scan local subnet check box. Click Next.
  16. If you downloaded the Onsite Manager installer from Service Center, the VAR Domain box is filled. If you downloaded the Onsite Manager installer from the portal, you must provide the VAR domain name.
  17. Select the Automatically reboot after the installation if required check box to automatically reboot after the installation completes, if a reboot is required. This bypasses the need to remote to the site server to manually reboot when the installation is complete
  18. Click Install.
  19. Click Finish to close the Onsite Manager Installer.

Moving an Onsite Manager

Best Practices

Only site administrators should move an Onsite Manager.

When moving an Onsite Manager, refer to the current version of the Setup Guide for the latest instructions.

Changes may be required on the destination server, so be sure to have installation files available for the operating system.

When moving to one or more servers, there are important networking changes that may be required to ensure that Barracuda RMM functions normally once completed.

SQL version

On the destination server, must be updated to the same service pack as was applied to the originating server. The collation must also be the same.

Proxy servers

May need to be configured to allow traffic from the Onsite Manager if the server host name or IP address changes. You may also need to run the Configure Proxy Server Settings utility from the Onsite Manager program group to restore normal communications.

Firewalls and routers

Must be updated to forward the correct ports to the destination server IP address, if it changes. No inbound access is required, but some internal security and infrastructure devices may require reconfiguration.

SNMP Devices

Must be reconfigured to send traps to the destination server IP address or host name, if it changes.

Syslog Devices

Must be reconfigured to send messages to the destination server IP address or host name, if it changes.

The procedures for moving an Onsite Manager assume SQL Management Studio Express is installed on the originating and destination servers using the LPIMWOMEXPRESS instance. If Onsite Manager was installed to an instance created by the installer, it is probably not installed. Click here to visit the download page for SQL Management Studio Express.
  1. Install SQL 2017 and SQL Management Studio on the destination Onsite Manager server.

When installing, ensure that you select a named instance, and specify the instance name LPIMWOMEXPRESS.
  2. Uninstall the Onsite Manager application using Windows. Depending on your version of Windows, you will do this using either Programs and Features or Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
  3. Create a back up of the MWData database using SQL Management Studio.

If you’re moving a database from an older version of SQL Server to a newer one, check the compatibility level of the database and change it if necessary. See this article from Microsoft for details.
  4. Using SQL Management Studio, restore the database backup to the destination server using the new LPIMWOMEXPRESS instance.

The database is backed up and restored using native SQL functionality. For more information, see Backing Up and Restoring Databases in one of the following:

Backing Up and Restoring Databases - Hosted

Backing Up and Restoring Databases - Hosting Provider

Backing Up and Restoring Databases - On Premise

  5. Download the Onsite Manager Installer from one of the following:
    • Barracuda Campus
    • Service Center—In Service Center, click Sites > the link to a site. On the General tab, click Download Onsite Manager.
  6. Install Onsite Manager on the destination server. When prompted, choose to keep the existing database. Complete the install and register Onsite Manager.
  7. Make any environmental changes (such as proxy server configuration) so that Onsite Manager resumes communications.
