Adding a Monitor for Network Services

  • Last updated on

A Network Services monitor checks the availability of the TCP or UDP port for a network service. It also gathers information about the server application or hardware providing the service.

Network services monitors are based on the IP address of a device. While you can configure the monitoring to occur on all addresses on a device, the addresses themselves must remain static. If a device changes IP addresses, network services monitoring stops functioning until you reapply the monitors using the current addresses.

Monitoring more than 100 network services at a single site may result in degraded performance of Onsite Manager. If more monitoring is required, consider using a second Onsite Manager.

The following are the default ports for the network services that Barracuda RMM looks for:

Network Service

Default Port

FTP21

Telnet

23

SMTP

25

DNS

53

HTTP

80

POP3

110

NNTP

What You Can Do

Use a Network Services monitor to:

  • Track the availability of network services.
  •   Detect activity on the most common services, such as HTTP , DNS or FTP.
  • Check the availability of a port.
  •   Determine the round-trip time of a request from the Onsite Manager server to the service.
  •   Provide backup reporting for relevant monitoring policies (for example, monitor the SMTP service in addition to using the Microsoft Exchange 2003 monitoring policy).

Network Services monitors can be added to devices individually and added to monitoring policies.

To add a monitor for Network Services
  1. Do one of the following:
    • To add the monitor to a policy, in Service Center, click Service Delivery Policies > Monitoring. Click the name of the monitoring policy. Click the Monitors tab.
    • To add the monitor to a device directly, in Service Center, click Configuration > Alerting  > Monitor & Alert Rules. From the Site list, select the site where the device is located. From the Device list, select the device to which you want to add a monitor.
  2. Click Add Monitor.
  3. Select Network Services from the list.
  4. Click Add Monitor.
  5. In the Monitor tab, type a title for the monitor.
  6. Optionally, type a description for the monitor.
  7. Ensure the Enabled check box is selected.
  8. From the Network Services list, select the service to monitor.
  9. In the IP Address list, ensure that All is selected.
  10. In the Port box, type the port used by the service.
  11. From the Timeout box, select an appropriate time to wait for a response. After the timeout period elapses, the service is considered not available.
  12. From the Polling Interval list, select an appropriate time to set how frequently the data is captured.
  13. Do one of the following to set when the monitor runs:
    • To set the monitor to run all the time, do nothing.
    • To change when the monitor runs, select either Daily Interval or Specific Interval from the list and use the corresponding lists to define the monitoring.
  14. To configure an alert, see Setting Alert Actions.
  15. Click Save.
