The Exchange Message-Level backup uses Exchange Web Services (EWS) to protect email messages and folders in Exchange mailboxes. Exchange Message-Level data can only be restored to the Exchange Server from where it was originally backed up. Exchange Message-Level backup is not designed to provide full Exchange recovery. It is designed to provide an easy method to recover lost email messages, attachments, and folders. The following types of recovery can be performed using the Exchange Message-Level backup:
- Single or multi-email recovery
- Email attachment recovery
- Mailbox folder/folder structure recovery
The Exchange Message-Level backup does not protect or allow for the recovery of the following:
- The entire user mailbox (including metadata) that can be restored back into the Exchange database
- Contacts
- Calendars
- Tasks
- Any other non-email message data
