Hardware Licensing
The Barracuda SecureEdge hardware license is available for various SecureEdge T appliances and Secure Connector IoT devices. These appliances are available in multiple hardware models to meet networking requirements, ranging from small and home offices up to large data centers. A SecureEdge hardware devices is bound to a license on activation. If the SecureEdge device must be replaced (RMA), the existing license will be transferred to the replacement unit.
For more information on hardware models, see Hardware Models and SecureEdge Hardware Specifications.
Virtual / Software Licensing
Barracuda SecureEdge provides purpose-built virtual appliances designed to protect and connect your network infrastructure. With virtual appliances, there are restrictions on the number of CPU cores that can be applied to a certain model, and these restrictions are enforced through the licensing of that product. You can use Barracuda SecureEdge virtual appliances with the most common hypervisors. For an overview of virtual models, see Virtual Systems (VTx) Deployment.

License States for SecureEdge Site Devices (T/VT)
There are three type of licenses available for SecureEdge Site devices:
Bring-Your-Own license (BYOL)
Pay-As-You-Go licenses (PAYG)
Demo license
The possible license states are as follows:
License | Type | Note |
---|---|---|
Unlicensed | - | The license is expired or not present on the Site device. Services are not enabled. An unlicensed box cannot establish any tunnel connections. |
Licensed | PAYG | The Site device is licensed with a pay-as-you-go license. Services are all enabled. |
Licensed | BYOL | The Site device is licensed with a bring-your-own license, and will expire on the displayed expiration date. Services are all enabled. |
Licensed | Demo | The Site device is licensed with a demo license, and will expire on the displayed expiration date. Services are all enabled. Note that demo licenses are issued for a period of 60 days. |
Grace Mode | - | The Site device is unlicensed, but still usable for 14 days. Services are all still enabled during that period. After the grace period has ended, services and tunnels are automatically disabled. |
You can verify the license status of a Site device on the SecureEdge Manager. For more information, see How to Display the License State of a Site Appliance. In addition, you can create notifications for various system actions such as Site License Expired, Site License Entered Grace Mode, Site License Expiring Soon, and Product License Activated.
What happens when a license expires?
When a subscription exceeds the expiration date, it enters Grace mode. SecureEdge Site device licenses have a grace period of 14 days. No later than 14 days prior to the expiration date, the Barracuda SecureEdge Manager displays a warning message. After the grace period, services (such as SD-WAN, Configuration, Routing, Firewall, IPS, and URL Filtering) and tunnels are automatically shut down.

The following table displays the system requirements for the SecureEdge Connector (software):
System Requirements | Connector ( software) Inbound | Connector ( software) Routed (app-to-app) |
---|---|---|
License | No license required * | Additional license required |
* This mode does not require a license but does require a valid Energize Updates (EU) subscription or validly licensed Site appliance.
