Setting up a VMWare Virtual Sensor

Setting up a VMWare virtual sensor requires several steps. Follow the procedures below:

  • To download the VMWare virtual sensor OVA
  • To set up the VMWare ESXi virtual SPAN port
  • To set up VMWare ESXi virtual machines

After you have followed these procedures, contact your Barracuda XDR representative to complete the setup.

To work properly, the host must have 2 Network Interface Cards.

The virtual sensor files are large and can take over 100GB of memory when unzipped. 

To download the VMWare virtual sensor OVA
  1. In Barracuda XDR Dashboard, click DownloadsVirtual Sensors.
  2. In the Step 2 box, select VMWare.
  3. Click one of the following buttons: 
    • VMWare OVA
    • VMWare OVA (Large)

    The OVA downloads.

To set up the VMWare ESXi Virtual SPAN port
  1. In VMWare ESXi, navigate to Networking > Virtual switches > Add Standard virtual switch.
  2. Type a name for the VSwitch.
  3. In Uplink 1, select the physical NIC the span/mirror port is connected to.

  4. Click Add.
  5. Under Port groups, select Add port grou p.
  6. Type a name for the port group.

    Best Practice

    The suggested name for the port group is SPAN.

  7. In VLAN ID, type 4095.
  8. Under Security, do the following:
    • In Promiscuous, enable Accept.
    • In MAC Address changes, enable Inherit from vSwitch.
    • In Forged transmits, enable Inherit from vSwitch.

  9. Click Add.
To set up VMWare ESXi virtual machines
  1. In VMWare ESXi, navigate to Virtual Machines, select Create/Register VM.

  2. Click Next.
  3. On the Select creation type page, click Deploy a Virtual machine from an OVF or OVA file.

  4. Select SKOUT-CPA-4.0-VMware.ova.
  5. Click Next.

  6. On the Select storage page, click Next.
  7. On the Deployment options page, do the following:
    • In Customer Network, select VM Network.
    • In SPAN, select span.

  9. On the Ready to complete page, click Finish.
