Understanding the Terminology for Hyper-V

  • Last updated on

The following terms are used in the Microsoft Hyper-V service module dashboards:

Host

The server on which one or more virtual machines are installed. The host machine provides the hardware that supports the guest virtual machine.

Guest

The virtual machine that resides on a host. Guest virtual machines run a separate, independent operating system.

Snapshot

A file that captures the data, hardware, and configuration of a guest virtual machine.

Subtree

Every iteration of a snapshot. Snapshots are accessible in the Hyper-V Manager console, and are stored in a tree format with the original snapshot at the root.
