Adding a Monitor for Microsoft Patch Health

  • Last updated on

A Patch Health monitor lets you check the status of Microsoft patching on devices. Two patch health rules let you check:

  • The status of patches.
  • If the device is checking for patches regularly.

The Patch Health monitor checks whether a patch has been applied and alerts you of its status:

  • Installed pending reboot
  • Failed
  • Installed
  • Needed
  • Not needed
Default

When monitoring is in place, the status of all patches on all devices is monitored. This configuration is solely for what conditions cause alerts to be triggered.

The Device Check for Updates monitor lets you track whether your devices check for updates on a regular basis.

Barracuda RMM integrates with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to provide Patch Status monitors. These monitors only function correctly if the devices being monitored have been added to a Windows Update Agent Policy and the devices report into patch management successfully.

What You Can Do with Patch Health

Since patch status for devices is always monitored, you can:

  • Set the alert notification option for a specific patch status.
  • Add a patch status monitor to a monitoring policy.

For example, if you have prompt delivery of Microsoft updates specified in your SLAs, you want to be alerted when a patch fails to install, especially on critical devices or if a server requires a reboot due to a patch.

The device might take up to 22 hours to check into WSUS. The alert may not trigger until the device has checked into WSUS.

What You Can Do with Device Check for Updates

You can set an alert that will let you know if a device is having an issue communicating with Windows Server Update Services or installing patches.

To add a monitor for patch health
  1. Do one of the following:
    • To add the monitor to a policy, in Service Center, click Service Delivery Policies > Monitoring. Click the name of the monitoring policy. Click the Monitors tab.
    • To add the monitor to a device directly, in Service Center, click Configuration > Alerting  > Monitor & Alert Rules. From the Site list, select the site where the device is located. From the Device list, select the device to which you want to add a monitor.
  2. Click Add Monitor.
  3. Select Patch Health from the list, and click Add Monitor.
  4. On the Monitor tab, in the Title box, type a title for the monitor.
  5. Optionally, in the Description box, type a description for the monitor.
  6. In the Monitor Type box, select a monitor type.
  7. To configure an alert, see Setting Alert Actions.
For example, you can trigger an alert when any patch has a status of failed, installed, needed, not needed, or unknown.

  8. Click Save.
