Why is the Expiration date on a message not consistent with the Repository retention period?

ArchiveOne Enterprise, all versions

In the properties of a repository, under the Retention tab there is an option that allows you to set a retention period to delete archived items after a predefined set of time.

When you search a mailbox through the admin console the results pane will show the Expiration Date and Received Date column. In some cases, the date in the Expiration date column is not shown as expected. You may find that the Expiration Date is showing a date which is not consistent with the retention period set on the repository.

The Expiration date is set based on the creation time of the message (PR_CREATION_TIME MAPI property). This property is set whenever the item is created, which is not necessarily when it is delivered.  This date can be reset if an item is moved out of the store (i.e. into a PST) and then returned back to the mailbox. Mailbox migration may also modify this property depending on what technology is used.

You can determine the PR_CREATION_TIME property by using a third party tool such as Outlook Spy and reviewing the MAPI properties of a message.
