Legal Hold in ArchiveOne

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 3 years ago
Solution #00007461

Scope:

ArchiveOne Enterprise, all versions

Answer:

Legal hold in ArchiveOne is available for all types of archived items, whether archived by mailbox, journal or PST archiving. Legal hold prevents an item from being deleted from the archive. For example, if you run an archive search you’ll find that the delete option is greyed out for any items on legal hold. Items which have already been marked as deleted or expired (but have not yet been purged from the ArchiveOne Recycle bin) can still be placed on legal hold. This will remove these items from the Recycle bin to prevent this data from being deleted.

Placing an item on legal hold only prevents its deletion from ArchiveOne; the original item or stub in Exchange can still be removed. For example, the user can still delete the message stub from their mailbox even if the item is on legal hold in the archive. If a user deletes the original or stubbed item in Exchange this does not affect the item in the archive.

To place an item on legal hold,

1.       Run a suitable archive search from the ArchiveOne Admin console to identify the data of interest.

2.       Click the View Summary button once the search has completed to review the results.

3.       Select any messages you wish to place on hold, right-click and select ‘On Hold’ option.

If you wish to delete an item which is on legal hold, and wish to take it off legal hold:

1.       Run a suitable archive search from the ArchiveOne Admin console to identify the data of interest.

2.       Click the View Summary button once the search has completed to review the results.

3.       Select any messages you wish to place on hold, right-click and select ‘Off Hold’ option.
