Barracuda Backup

What can I do when "Error occurred during backup initialization" appears in reports from my Barracuda Backup Server?

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 2 months ago
Solution #00005603

Scope:
All Barracuda Backup Servers, all firmware versions.

Answer:

If you see an "Error occurred during backup initialization" message in the backup reports from your Barracuda Backup server, the issue could be caused by mis-configured or disabled Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) drivers. The "vssadmin" program allows you to check on the status of these drivers. Open a command prompt and type:

"vssadmin list writers"

C:\>vssadmin list writers

vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (C) Copyright 2001 Microsoft Corp.

If the output of this command contains writers with a state that is not 'Stable', it will be necessary to run a set of commands that will re-register your VSS drivers. The methodology for doing so will vary based on your operating system:

Windows 2003 and before:

VSS Drivers on Windows Server 2003 and before can be reset using the following Microsoft Knowledgebase Solution:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940184

Windows 2008 / SBS / Vista / Windows 7 and after:
VSS Drivers on Windows Server 2008 and after can normally be reset just by restarting the services from the Management Console. This can be done with the following instructions, taken from Microsoft Knowledge base article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009533.

1. Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search box, and hit Enter.

2. Right-click the following services one at a time and click Restart:

COM+ Event System
? Volume Shadow Copy

3. Close the Services snap-in.

4. Open an elevated command prompt, type vssadmin list writers, and then hit ENTER.

5. Verify that the VSS writers are now listed.
