How can I resolve an "Error reading object" issue while backing up a ESX/ESXI virtual machine while using my Barracuda Backup Service?

* Barracuda Backup Servers running firmware 5.0 and higher

The most common cause for this error is a virtual machine that has 'crashed' or has missing blocks.

The vsphere logs will show entries like these:
              Error backing up disk: Error QueryChangedDiskAreas 

To resolve this issue:
  1. Remove any snapshots for the virtual machine.
  2. Disable Changed Block Tracking.
  3. Re-enable Changed Block Tracking.
