Barracuda Reference / FAQ

Why aren't notification emails being sent out on any Barracuda Networks product?

Solution #2821

Scope:
All Barracuda Networks products (except for Barracuda Load Balancers), all firmware versions.

Answer:
If an administrator has entered anything into the Outbound SMTP Host/Smart Host field on the Basic > Administration page of the GUI of their Barracuda Networks product, and that SMTP host is not properly configured to accept mail from the Barracuda Networks device, outgoing notification and report emails will not reach the intended recipient. In most cases this option should be left blank because the Barracuda unit will be able to deliver these messages on its own.

By default, all Barracuda Networks products use MX DNS records to deliver outgoing mail messages without needing any additional configuration (beyond specifying valid DNS servers on the IP Configuration page). The Barracuda Spam Firewall will send mail using the destination server of the recipient domain if that domain has been configured on the Barracuda Spam Firewall. If the recipient domain is not hosted by the Barracuda Spam Firewall, it will also follow MX records to deliver the mail message.

Additional Notes:
Barracuda Load Balancers and Barracuda Link Balancers are the exceptions, and do need an Outbound SMTP Host/Smart Host to be configured on the Basic > Administration page.
