How do I block NDR backscatter from Google Groups and Blogger with my Email Security Gateway?

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 5 months ago

Solution #00003465

Scope:

This solution applies to all Email Security Gateways with current Energize Updates subscriptions. This change is effective for Email Security Gateways with firmware release 3.3 running Spam Definition 3.0.72791 or later and Email Security Gateway firmware releases 3.4 and 3.5 running Spam Definition 3.1.47515 or later.

Answer:

Effective 2008-04-11, Barracuda Networks has implemented rules in its rules scoring engine to block NDR backscatter from Google Groups and Blogger mail servers. This change was made at the request of multiple Email Security Gateway customers, and the root of the issue stems from complaints that these two Google properties reject mails sent to invalid recipients using NDR bounce messages rather than SMTP response codes.

NDR bounce messages from these two Google properties will contain one of the following in the X-Barracuda-Spam-Report in their email headers:

7.00 BSF_SC0_GOOGLEGROUPS      NDR From Googlegroups

7.00 BSF_SC0_BLOGGER     NDR From Blogger

No other email from Google properties should be affected by these changes.
