Barracuda Reference / FAQ

Why is my Email Security Gateway reporting fewer spam messages blocked since upgrading to a new firmware version?

  • Type: Knowledgebase

Solution #00003819

Scope:
All Email Security Gateways, firmware versions 3.5.11.020 and above.

Answer:
Due to changes in a recent firmware release, Barracuda Networks has modified the way that the Email Security Gateway handles rate controlling of spam mail servers. Before, rate controlling was implemented by deferring the connection of the sending mail server; this resulted in the sending server reconnecting several times to re-attempt to send email. Now, rather than deferring the connection and thereby causing the sending server to attempt to reconnect, the connection will be dropped immediately, causing the server to reduce the amount of retries and thus lowering the overall incoming spam statistics.
