Layer 7 Application Detection Settings

  • Last updated on

Barracuda Networks recommends using the newer Application Control.

This article explains the sizing parameters within the Layer 7 Application Detection section of the Barracuda NextGen Firewall F-Series.

Configure Layer 7 Application Detection Settings

To specify the settings, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to CONFIGURATION > Configuration Tree > Box > Infrastructure Service > General Firewall Configuration.
  2. From the Configuration menu on the left, click Application Detection.
  3. From the Configuration Mode menu, select Advanced View.
  4. Click Lock.
  5. To enable application detection, set the parameter Enable Protocol Detection to yes.
  6. From the Application Policy list, select the handling policy for detected traffic:
    • No-Detection
    • Detect-Only – Detects traffic in the firewall access cache but takes no action.
    • Limit-Bandwidth – Limits the bandwidth for detected traffic considering the limit value specified below.
    • Drop-Traffic – Blocks detected traffic.
    • Assign QoS Band – Assign detected traffic to a Shape Connector.
  7. Leave the parameter Application Bandwidth (KBit/s) as default.

This option is enabled by policy setting to Limit-Bandwidth. It specifies the maximum bandwidth that should be allowed for P2P traffic.

  8. The following parameters are available for modification:
    • Application QoS Band – Assigns detected peer-to-peer traffic to a pre-defined QoS band (see: Traffic Shaping).
    • Use Preselected Applications – Uses the predefined list of applications from the Preselected Applications list.
    • Explicitly Add Applications – Adds specific protocols from the list of all available protocols.
    • Explicitly Skip Applications – Excludes specific protocols from the list all available protocols.
    • Preselected Applications – Enables or disables the detection of all known game application protocols.

Changes regarding application detection require a Firmware restart (CONTROL > Box).

  9. Click Send Changes and Activate

To activate changes made in this part of the configuration, you must perform a firmware restart. To do so, go to the CONTROL tab, click the Box icon in the ribbon bar, expand the Operating System menu and click the Firmware Restart link.
