Barracuda CloudGen Firewall

What licensing changes will be introduced with firmware 5.2.0 for my Barracuda NG Firewall ?

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 7 months ago
Solution #00005564

All Barracuda NG Firewalls and Barracuda NG Control Centers with firmware release 5.2.x.

Starting with the manufacturing release of Barracuda NG Firewall firmware release 5.2.0  in May 2011 new shipments will be licensed via auto activation. During auto activation the license files will be transferred automatically to the Barracuda NG Firewall. For Barracuda NG Firewall Vx editions a "Product Key" will be sent out via email for verification before the actual activation.

  • Barracuda NG Firewall F10 to F900, Barracuda NG Control Center C400 and C610 appliances:

In order for the Barracuda NG Firewalls to retrieve the licenses automatically via auto activation an administrator needs to connect to the appliance using the NG admin management tool. The workstation that NG admin is used on needs to be able to access the Internet in order to be able to carry out activation and license retrieval on behalf of the accessed appliance. By default, the activation procedure starts automatically after 30 seconds. It can also be started manually on the NG Admin ?Status? page. During activation all available licenses will be transferred and stored in the licenses configuration node on the NG Firewall.

  • Barracuda NG Firewall Vx editions VF25 - VF8000, Barracuda NG Control Center Vx editions VC400, VC610, VC820:

For Barracuda NG Firewall Vx editions the NG Admin application will ask for a token before activation. At this point you will enter the Product Key (distributed via email). This is usually a simple text string containing letters and numbers separated by dashes like e.g. E6NEN-H5H69-62WKY. Upon entering the Product Key, the MAC address of your virtual machine will be retrieved. Licenses will be issued based on this MAC address and provided to the NG Firewall Vx. The VMware machine will also receive a unique serial ID that you will need for future downloads of IPS updates, content security updates and license extensions.
Barracuda Networks recommends backing up your VMware machine regularly in order to ensure future availability of the serial ID. The mere creation of a backup of the NG Firewall configuration (par file) will not back up the serial of the virtual machine.

How to obtain licenses for prior firmware versions:

  • Barracuda NG Firewall F10 to F900, Barracuda NG Control Center C400 and C610 appliances:

If you do not receive license files via email during the transition period (May-August), perform an auto activation and retrieve then export the license files before performing a firmware downgrade.  If this fails or you have already downgraded the Barracuda NG Firewall to a prior firmware version please contact Barracuda Networks customer services at customer_services@barracuda.com .

  • Barracuda NG Firewall Vx editions VF25 - VF8000, Barracuda NG Control Center Vx editions VC400, VC610, VC820:

In order to receive a valid serial for your virtual machine Barracuda Networks strongly recommends that you activate the virtual machine with firmware release 5.2 or later and export the license files. The activated Virtual Machine may either be downgraded by reinstalling (serial id is preserved) or should be preserved for future use with firmware release 5.2 or higher. In the latter case a new virtual machine may be set up for the previous firmware with the exact same MAC address and the previously exported licenses files may be imported into the new pre-5.2 firmware virtual machine. If you do not receive the required activation token via email, if auto-activation of your Barracuda NG Firewall Vx fails or if you have already downgraded to firmware 5.0.x or 4.2.x please contact Barracuda Networks customer services at customer_services@barracuda.com .

Additional Notes:

Until August 1st 2011, License files will also be distributed via email in order to ensure uninterrupted deployments for customers that have not upgraded to Firmware 5.2.
