How can I configure my Email Security Gateways to work with the Barracuda Load Balancer using Direct Server Return (DSR) mode?

  • Date changed: 10 months ago
Solution #00002181

Scope:
All Barracuda Load Balancers in use with all Email Security Gateways, firmware versions 3.5.12 and above.

Answer:
Using Direct Server Return mode on the Barracuda Load Balancer requires a non-arping loopback adapter for each real server, for each relevant virtual IP. When load-balancing Email Security Gateways, a manual configuration is required on each Email Security Gateway.

To configure one or more non-arping loopback adapters on the Email Security Gateway, navigate to the Advanced > Advanced IP Configuration page of the Email Security Gateway's web interface. Under the Loopback Adapter Configuration heading, add the Virtual IP address of each service that is load-balancing the Email Security Gateway. Repeat this step for each Email Security Gateway being load-balanced. For more information about configuring Direct Server Return with the Barracuda Load Balancer, see Solution #00001223.

Additional Notes:
When load balancing Email Security Gateways running firmware version 3.5.11 or below, you must either update your firmware to a newer version or call Barracuda Networks Technical Support to configure your Email Security Gateways to work with your Barracuda Load Balancer.

When using any of the other deployment modes, no additional network adapters are required and setup can be completed independently, regardless of firmware version.
