Solution #00005376

Scope:

Applies to Barracuda Spam Firewall, firmware version 5.x.

Answer:

The first thing that you will need to do is to validate your domains before you can start to use encryption on your Barracuda Spam Firewall firmware version 5.x. There are two ways to validate your domains:

The first way to validate your domains is CNAME Validation. This is where your Barracuda will verify against your DNS server(s).

  • When you choose CNAME validation, you will get a green banner that will look something like this: Please create the sub domain: barracuda089044126.example.com with a CNAME record "encrypt.barracudanetworks.com".
i.e: barracuda089044126.example.com CNAME encrypt.barracudanetworks.com

  • After creating this record return and click Confirm Validation to complete the domain verification process with the Barracuda Email Encryption Service.
  • After creating this record return and click Confirm Validation to complete the domain verification process with the Barracuda Email Encryption Service.
  • Enter the information into your DNS server and click on Confirm Validation. Then your Barracuda will confirm the entry you just created against your DNS server.
  • Make sure to give it some time before you try to validate as DNS may take extra time to propagate across your network.

The second way to validate your domains is Postmaster Validation. This is where the Barracuda sends an email to Postmaster@yourdomain.com.

  • When you enter the domain to be validated, you will receive a banner at the top of the page that will say this: An email has been sent to postmaster@example.com, after following the link in this email return and click Confirm Validation to complete the domain verification process with the Barracuda Email Encryption Service.
  • Click on the link in the email and then return to the page to confirm your Validation.

The next thing that you may or may not want to do is to brand your Encryption server. This allows you to put your company logo or a logo that is associated with the domain that you validated on to the encryption server. This will prevent the email recipients from questioning the validity of the server they are connecting to.

At this point your encryption is setup and ready to go.  There are some other options that will help you configure what gets sent to the encryption server and what does not.

If you navigate to Block/Accept > Content Filters you can set up subject, header, or body filters.  So, if there is a special subject that you want to insure is encrypted, you can setup a filter for that subject. For example, if you have an account that wants to accept only encrypted email, you would setup a Subject filter for Account 123456. Now, any email that is going outbound with the subject of Account 123456 will get encrypted outbound.

The same goes for attachments. There are outbound filters for certain types of attachments that you can specify.

Additionally, users may review our FAQ settings on the message center for further q&a of our encryption setup.
