Barracuda Link Balancer

How can I configure my Barracuda Link Balancer to send email notifications through my VPN tunnel?

Solution #00005477

Scope:

This solution applies to all Barracuda Link Balancer models, firmware version 2.1.0.010 and above.
The Link Balancer must be a remote VPN gateway to the VPN tunnel.

Answer:
To configure your Barracuda Link Balancer to send email notifications through your VPN tunnel you need to add a static route in the following page of your Barracuda Link Balancer.

Advanced > Advanced IP Config: Static Routes

If this is not done, the Barracuda Link Balancer will send the email notification via the next available WAN Link. This means the TCP connection needed by the Barracuda Link Balancer to send the email notification is not established via VPN tunnel.

Adding a static route:
If a Barracuda Link Balancer's WAN Link is the VPN gateway to your local network and if the Barracuda Link Balancer's LAN/Virtual interface is the gateway to your local network then the static route needs to be the following:
  • IP/Network Address: The IP address of your SMTP server
  • Netmask: The proper netmask.
  • Gateway Address: The gateway IP address configured on the SMTP server or an IP address that can route packets to the SMTP server.
  • Link: The LAN or Virtual Interface that is used by your VPN tunnel.

Solution #0003700 also provides details on how to create a static route.
