Barracuda Message Archiver Vx Quick Start Guide

This article refers to Barracuda Message Archiver Legacy Release firmware or higher.

 Make sure you have completed deployment of the virtual appliance on your hypervisor before continuing with the steps in this article. A single virtual NIC is required on your virtual appliance.

Use the steps in this article to set up your Barracuda Message Archiver Vx.

Step 1. Open Firewall Ports

If your Barracuda Message Archiver Vx is located behind a corporate firewall, open the following ports on your firewall to ensure proper operation:

(1) Access via Port 22 is required only if Technical Support is requested. See also Required Outbound Connections for Barracuda Appliances.

(2) Port 53 outbound is required only when internal DNS is not used.

(3) You can disable the initial provisioning port once the initial provisioning process is complete.

Step 2. Start the Virtual Appliance, Configure Networking, and Enter the License

Important
  • Once you enter your Vx token, the Barracuda Message Archiver Vx serial number updates to match the token; the previous Vx serial number is not retained.

  • If you upgrade your Barracuda Message Archiver Vx, for example, model V450 to V650, both the model number and the serial number are updated, replacing the original model number and serial number.

 You should have received your Barracuda Vx license token via email or from the website when you downloaded the Barracuda Message Archiver Vx package. If not, you can request an evaluation on the Barracuda website at https://www.barracuda.com/purchase/evaluation or purchase one from https://www.barracuda.com/purchase/index. The license token looks similar to the following: 01234-56789-ACEFG.

  1. In your hypervisor client, start the virtual appliance and allow it to boot up.
  2. From the console, log in as admin with the password admin.
  3. In the System Configuration window, use the down arrow key and select TCP/IP Configuration. Configure the following:
    • WAN IP Address
    • WAN Netmask
    • Gateway Address
    • Primary DNS Server
    • Secondary DNS Server
  4. If the Internet can be accessed only through an explicit proxy, configure the proxy server using Proxy Server Configuration (Optional), so that it reaches the Internet for provisioning.
  5. Under Licensing, enter your Barracuda License Token and Default Domain to complete provisioning. The appliance will reboot as a part of the provisioning process.

Step 3. Accept the End User License Agreement and Verify Configuration

Log in to the Barracuda Message Archiver Vx web interface, accept the End User License Agreement, and finalize the configuration:

  1. Go to http://<your ip>:8000 to access the web interface.
  2. Read through the End User License Agreement. Scroll down to the end of the agreement.
  3. Enter the required information: Name, Email Address, and Company (if applicable). Click Accept. You are redirected to the Login page.
  4. Log in to the Barracuda Message Archiver Vx web interface as the administrator using the credentials admin / admin.
  5. Go to the BASIC > IP Configuration page, and configure the following:
    1. Verify the values for IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway.
    2. Verify the values for Primary and Secondary DNS Server.
    3. Enter the External System Name and Port. These values are used by your users to access the Barracuda Message Archiver.
    4. Enter the Barracuda Message Archiver Default Hostname and Default Domain. This is the name used for status alert emails, email reports, etc. For example, enter barracuda as the Default Hostname and <yourdomainname>.com as the Default Domain.
    5. In the Local Domains section, enter the email domains that are to be archived, for example, <mydomainname>.com. Click Add after each domain entry.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Go to the BASIC > Administration page, and in the EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS section, enter email address contacts to receive notifications, separating multiple addresses with commas:
    1. Mobile Apps Support Email Address – If you intend to allow access to the Barracuda Message Archiver Vx by end-users with mobile devices, enter an email address within your organization where support queries from mobile application users are sent.
    2. System Contact Email Address – Email address to receive communications from Barracuda Central containing additional information about new firmware releases, security bulletins, and customer service issues.
    3. System Email Reply Address Email address is set as the From address on email correspondence sent out by Barracuda Message Archiver Vx.
    4. System Alerts Email Address – Email address to receive all automated alerts that are sent directly by the Barracuda Message Archiver Vx.
  8. In the Outbound SMTP Host (Smart Host) / Outbound SMTP Port fields, enter your normal outbound SMTP host or your Microsoft Exchange server Smart Host, and the associated port number.
  9. Click Save.

Step 4. Update the Firmware

  1. Go to ADVANCED > Firmware Update. If there is a new Latest General Release available, click Download Now, and allow the download to complete. To avoid damaging the unit, do not power OFF during a firmware update or download.
  2. Click Apply Now to start the update process after which the unit automatically reboots.

Read the Release Notes to learn about new features, enhancements, and fixes. It is good practice to verify settings, as new features may be included with the firmware update.

  • Archived Data BackupNow that you are storing data, you need to back up the Barracuda Message Archiver data. You can back up your raw email data as well as data directories that house statistics, index, and other metadata snapshots the Barracuda Message Archiver generates.   • Deployment Mail archival configuration is based on the Email Servers in your environment. Once you set up your Barracuda Message Archiver, determine the deployment that best suits your environment from the available deployment options.
