How can I back up my messages stored on the Barracuda Message Archiver?

Solution #00002650

Scope:
All Barracuda Message Archivers, all firmware versions.

Answer:
There are two possible ways to back up your data when using the Barracuda Message Archiver. You can configure the Barracuda Message Archiver to make the message store available as an SMB / CIFS share, and you can mirror storage data on your own external drives.

To configure the Barracuda Message Archiver to make the message store available as an SMB share, go to the Advanced > Backup page. Then, under the SMB Export For Backup heading, set the Enabled option to Yes, specify the workgroup name, and enter the SMB password. You should then be able to mount the message store as an SMB share on your network and create backups yourself (manually, or using third party software like Tivoli Storage Manager). The name of the share available is BarracudaMessageArchiver. Make sure to mount the share with the username of smb.

Alternatively, you can mirror the Barracuda Message Archiver's data onto one or more external storage devices, and back up the mirrored data instead. This can be useful with third party programs like Symantec's Backup Exec that require specific software be installed onto the storage device, as you cannot install any third party software onto the Barracuda Message Archiver itself. For more information on mirroring data onto external storage devices, see Solution #00002671.
