Barracuda NextGen Firewall X

URL Filter does not block any pages

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 5 months ago
Solution #00005072

Scope:
This solution replies to:
- NG Firewall firmware versions 4.2.x, 5.0.x, 5.2.x
- netfence firmware versions 4.2.x

Symptoms:

The URL filter does not block any web pages although this type of pages is listed as not allowed in the configuration. The configuration is correct and a valid license is installed.

Solution:

The URL filter does not have a local site database as default (could be activated in the configuration). Instead, for each categorisation request, it queries a central Cobion database server.

The Barracuda NG Firewall gateway that hosts the URL filter needs internet access on two defined ports to establish a successful connection to the IIS server:
    - TCP 443
    - UDP 6000

If the Barracuda NG Firewall gateway cannot contact the IIS server, it cannot accomplish categorisation.

Make sure that the Barracuda NG Firewall gateway that hosts the URL filter is able to connect to the internet on ports TCP 443 and UDP 6000.
If this is not possible for any reason, the address of an "HTTP proxy" service, through which the URL filter is allowed to contact the IIS servers, can be defined instead. Define a proxy in the "Config" > "Box" > "Virtual Servers" > "Assigned Services" > "IIS service" > "IIS Proventia Web Filter Service" > "Proxy".
