Barracuda Web Security Gateway

What is the Barracuda Web Filter's Ethernet Bypass Hardware? How does it work?

Solution #00001419

Scope:
Barracuda Web Filters (models 310 and above), firmware 4.3.0.015 and above.

Answer:
Ethernet Bypass Hardware is the Barracuda Web Filter's physical bypass mode. This means that it must be configured inline for this feature to be useful (all web traffic must be directed through the Barracuda Web Filter in order for it to function in this mode). In the event that the Barracuda Web Filter fails, it fails open, allowing all traffic to flow. It fails open when the operating system is down, the hard drives are down, or the unit is powered off. This is called Hard Bypass mode, and when a Barracuda Web Filter fails open in this way, it is as if the Barracuda Web Filter is no longer on the network, and all traffic passes directly through it as it would a network cable.
