Can the Barracuda Web Filter block or allow only portions of a domain?

Solution #00001538

Scope:
All Barracuda Web Filters on version 3.0.1.09 or higher.

Answer:
On the Block/Accept > Exceptions page, it is possible to allow or block an entire domain while blocking or allowing certain pages on that domain. To do this, simply create rules for the specific sections of those websites you wish to block or allow listed above the domain you then wish to allow or block.

For example, let's say you wanted to only allow the Google Maps portion of google.com. On the Block/Accept > Exceptions page, you would first create a Pattern rule to allow all traffic to the following expression:

maps.google.com

Below that, you would then create a Domain rule to block the entire domain, using the expression:

google.com

Alternatively, suppose you wanted to allow all of google.com except for the Google Image Search section. You would first create a rule blocking all traffic to the Google Image Search section of the website:

images.googe.com

Below that, you would then create a Domain rule to allow the entire domain, using the expression:

google.com

The order is important, as the rules listed higher take precedence over the rules below them. The Barracuda Web Filter can also block or allow domain subdirectories (e.g. google.com/ig) in the same manner.
