How can I block streaming media on my Barracuda Web Filter?

Solution #00003427

Scope:
All Barracuda Web Filters, all firmware versions.

Answer:
There are three ways for an administrator to block streaming media for users browsing through a Barracuda Web Filter:
  • Block the Streaming Media content filter category on the Block/Accept > Content Filter page for both authenticated and unauthenticated users. Remember that this will block all HTTP traffic to and from the list of domains that have been categorized as websites that provide streaming media, and not the streaming media specifically.
  • Block specific websites that host streaming content on the Block/Accept > Domains page for both authenticated and unauthenticated users. Note that certain websites host content on other domains, so blocking multiple domains to prevent users from accessing content on a single domain may be necessary. For instance, youtube.com hosts content on the ytimg.com domain, so to effectively block youtube streaming video, you would need to block both youtube.com and ytimg.com on the Block/Accept > Domains page.
  • Use MIME blocking on the Block/Accept > MIME Type Blocking page for both authenticated and unauthenticated users. Common streaming media MIME types include:

    audio/basic
    audio/x-aiff
    audio/x-wav
    audio/x-mpeg

    audio/x-mpeg-2

    audio/echospeech

    audio/voxware

    application/fastman

    application/x-pn-realaudio

    application/vnd.music-niff

    x-music/x-midi

    application/vnd.koan

    application/x-koan

    text/x-speech

    video/mpeg

    video/mpeg-2

    video/quicktime

    video/x-msvideo

    video/x-sgi-movie

    video/vdo

    video/vnd.vivo

    video/vivo

This is not a complete list, so to ensure the Web Filter will block the content you intend, check specific website pages to see which specific MIME type the websites use to describe their streaming content.
