Barracuda Web Security Gateway

Why is my Barracuda Web Filter not filtering HTTPS traffic?

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 10 years ago
Solution #00003691

Scope:
Applies to all Barracuda Web Filter appliances on all versions of firmware, when installed as a forward proxy.

Answer:
With the Barracuda Web Filter deployed in forward proxy mode, it is possible that both incoming and outgoing DNS traffic will bypass the unit. The result is that the Web Filter is unable to filter HTTPS traffic due to an empty HTTPS DNS cache.

To remedy the issue, ensure that both incoming and outgoing UDP traffic over port 53 is routed through the Barracuda Web Filter.
