How do I block or allow applications on the Barracuda Web Filter?

  • Type: Knowledgebase
  • Date changed: 9 years ago

Solution #00004206

Scope:

This solution applies to all Barracuda Web Filters deployed in-line.

Answer:

To block applications, the Barracuda Web Filter must be deployed in-line. Navigate to Block/Accept > Applications on the Barracuda Web Filter to block or allow specific Instant Messenger services and other types of applications.

For a user to download or use an application, the user’s application needs to communicate with an external server. When you block an application, the Barracuda Web Filter identifies traffic generated by the application and blocks it.

You can use the application blocking feature as a proactive measure to protect your network against malware. For example, you may want to block the IRC application because this type of application often introduces bots into networks. Bots are automated programs that repeatedly run specific tasks and malicious bots are common in IRC communications.

You can also use the application blocking feature when you hear about a virus spreading over a specific IM service or tool. In this case, you can proactively protect your network from the infection by blocking that particular service until the threat has been resolved.
