Can a Customer use SSL Inspection With My Chromebooks?

SOLUTION #00007249

Barracuda Web Filters, Firmware 7.1 and higher

Yes, you can, but there are a number of caveats:

1. This feature only works on firmware and above. To enable this feature (Chromebook Compatibility), you will need to contact Barracuda Networks Technical Support

2. Safe Search enforcement via the Web Filter will not work. This is because Chromebook Compatibility (enabled above) allows google features necessary to Chromebook operation to work by bypassing SSL Inspection of some google domains. This breaks Safe Search enforcement functionality.
Safe Search can enforced through Google Apps for Education. However, remember that this feature will still not work on other devices such as laptops, iPads, workstations, and so on.

3. SSL Inspection for Chromebooks (and iPads) is only supported for Chromebooks in Proxy Mode. It will not work in Transparent Mode. Google has an article that explains this here:
At this time, the Web Filter can only inspect Proxy traffic or inline traffic, not both at the same time, so if you choose to inspect Chromebooks via proxy, you will not be able to inspect inline traffic.

4. Chromebooks cannot be SSL inspected during registration. For more information on this, see the section "Using SSL Inspection" in our techlib article here:
If you have any questions about using SSL Inspection with your Chromebooks, please contact Barracuda Networks Technical Support.

If you need to enable SSL Inspection on both proxy and transparent traffic, purchasing a second web filter solution will allow you to use one device to filter inline traffic and the second to filter proxy traffic. Barracuda networks recommends employing one Web Filter for Chromebooks, and another for your desktop network. Barracuda Networks load balancers can be used in this environment to enable multiple Web Filters to work together in tandem. If you are interested in this configuration, please contact your Barracuda Networks Territory Manager at, or you can email us at, or call (408)342-5400.
