When using Kerberos authentication, how can I prevent iTunes from prompting for authentication using my Barracuda Web Filter?

  • Type: Knowledgebase

Solution #00006223

Scope:

Applies to all Barracuda Web Filter appliances on all versions of firmware when using Kerberos authentication.

Answer:

Apple iTunes does not provide support for Kerberos authentication. This creates an authentication failure when attempting to use iTunes, since it will prompt for credentials and therefore ultimately fail. To bypass this incompatibility, Kerberos authentication must be bypassed entirely.

Procedure:
1) In the Web Filter web interface, navigate to Advanced>Proxy.
2) Towards the bottom of the page, under Regular Expressions, click Bulk Edit.
3) Add the following entries to the Bulk Edit screen:

^(.*\.)?apple\.com:443,Yes
^http://([^:/]*\.)?apple\.com/.*$,Yes
^(.*\.)?verisign\.com:443,Yes
^(.*\.)?mzstatic\.com:443,Yes
^http://([^:/]*\.)?mzstatic\.com/.*$,Yes

4. Click Save.
5. Under Header, click Bulk Edit & add the following:

User-Agent,iTunes*,Yes

6. Click Save.
7. Open iTunes and navigate to the iTunes store. You should no longer be prompted for credentials.
